Syllabus:

  • In this class, students will learn how to thread, operate and troubleshoot a sewing machine. Students will learn how to use sewing tools and notions; use seam allowances, and apply basic product construction in sewing a pillow.

  • In this class, students will create a tote bag that's perfect to take to the market or as an essential carry-all bag. This class is an opportunity for students to develop more familiarity with their sewing machine by making a product. Students will learn how to put together components of a lined tote bag with a pocket.

  • This class takes your learning to the next level by learning about fabric types, needles, seam finishes, and sewing feet. This is solely a technique class, creating swatches for development and reference.

  • In this class, students will create a zippered pouch. Building on the fundamentals of the previous classes, students will implement their skills with design, cutting, construction, and zipper insertion. Project-based learning includes making a lined zipper pouch of chosen fabrics and size.

  • This class takes students through the basics of how to read a commercial pattern: understanding how to properly measure and apply measurements to working with a pattern. Students will explore the foundations of garment fitting. Project-based learning will include measuring, reading a pattern, tracing, cutting, and preparing the pattern. Homework for this class will include washing, ironing, and cutting your fabric out at home in preparation for the next class.

  • This final class builds upon the pattern mechanics foundation to apply learned skills in constructing a garment. Students will apply their favorite seam finishing techniques and learn new ones. Students will learn how to make an elastic casing for a waistband and will learn to hem. The perfect finishing touch will be adding a custom 'Cleveland Sews' tag to the completed project!
