Sewing Fundamentals I is a 6-learning module program for new and beginning sewists. You can participate in the 6-week series and earn a certificate. There is a $20 commercial pattern charge, which will be yours to keep if you take the program or modules 5 + 6. Please add the commercial pattern to your cart if you intend to participate in modules 5+ 6 upon check-out. All other supplies, (machines, fabric, tools, and notions) will be provided for class. You are more than welcome to bring your own machine and fabrics to class if you so choose. Snacks, coffee, tea, and water are provided for all classes.
Class Module 1: Sewing and Machine Fundamentals (Saturday, July 24; 1-4pm)
In this class, students will learn how to thread, operate and troubleshoot a sewing machine. Students will learn how to use sewing tools and notions; use seam allowances, and how to apply basic product construction in sewing a pillow.
Class Module 2: Product Construction I - Market Tote Bag ( July 1st; 1-4pm )
In this class, students will create a tote bag that's perfect to take to the market or as an essential carry-all bag. This class is an opportunity for students to develop more familiarity with their sewing machine by making a product. Students will learn how to put together components of a lined tote bag with a pocket.
Class Module 3: Refining Your Craftsmanship (Saturday, July 8; 1-4pm)
This class takes your learning to the next level by learning about fabric types, needles, seam finishes, and sewing feet. This is solely a technique class, creating swatches for development and reference.
Class Module 4: Product Construction II - Zippered Pouches (Saturday, July 15st; 1-4pm )
In this class, students will create a zippered pouch. Building on the fundamentals of the previous classes, students will implement their skills with design, cutting, construction, and zipper insertion. Project-based learning includes making a lined zipper pouch of chosen fabrics and size.
Class Module 5: Intro. to Commercial Patterns (Saturday, July 22nd; 1-4pm)
This class takes students through the basics of how to read a commercial pattern, understand how to properly measure yourself, and apply measurements to working with a pattern. Students will explore some of the foundations of garment fitting. Project-based learning will include measuring, reading a pattern, tracing, cutting, and preparing the pattern. Homework for this class will include washing, ironing, and cutting your fabric out at home in preparation for the next class.
Class Module 6: Garment Construction I: Lounge Pants (Saturday, July 29th; 1-4pm)
This final class builds upon the pattern mechanics foundation to apply learned skills in constructing a garment. Students will apply their favorite seam finishing techniques and learn new ones. Students will learn how to make an elastic casing for a waistband and will learn to hem. The perfect finishing touch will be adding a custom 'Cleveland Sews' tag to the completed project!
